Kilimanjaro Climb and Safari July, 2011
This adventure will be led by Rick and Celia Wilcox. Rick & Celia are excited to return to Africa and work with our new-found African guides for another climb of Kilimanjaro. After leading or participating in over forty high altitude expeditions, Rick has a deep appreciation for altitude. Kilimanjaro, at 19,340’ has serious altitude concerns.
We have chosen the Machame Route because, while rugged, offers non-technical high altitude hiking. Because of our strong porter staff, all you ever have to carry is your day pack.
While there are certainly lots of operators on Kilimanjaro, the main reason to go with IMCS is our  extensive experience keeping people safe at high altitude. We always carry a Gamov Bag and oxygen and while not fans of Diamox, we know when and how to use it.
We are always pleasantly surprised with the friendliness and knowledge of our porters Tanzanian guides and cooks. They do a fantastic job keeping us healthy and serving great food. We look forward to working with guides like Lazaro and John, who both have climbed the peak over 400 times. The African guides do a great job, but if you have a problem at 18,000 feet, it's good to know that you have a real pro with you.
Some groups attempt to climb Kilimanjaro in as fast as four days, only 40% of these groups make the summit. We take eight days to do the climb, including a sixth night in the crater at 19,000 feet. On the morning of the seventh day we climb only 300 vertical feet to the highest point, Uhuru Peak (19,340 feet). Our success rate is 100 %! We believe this is the best and most enjoyable way to climb the mountain, and with high altitude why rush.
Our Tanzanian guides, cooks and porters do a fantastic job of keeping us healthy and serving great food. You will be amazed at the quality of the food and the friendliness and efficiency of our crew. We will sleep in private tents, eat in our own dining tent and have the use of our private bathroom tent.
Some people climb Kilimanjaro in as fast as four days. Only 40% of these groups make the summit. We chose to take eight days to do the climb, in order to acclimatize properly and take our time to enjoy this outstanding mountain.
After our climb, we will return to our hotel for a day of R&R. We will spend the next three days on safari viewing some of the most fascinating animals on our planet! We will see elephants, giraffes and lions along with many other animals on the plains, in the forests and in the water. Bring lots of film or Mega Bytes. During our three days in the National Parks we will spend the nights in comfortable safari lodges.
